this is the debut record from birmingham al's HIRAETH
the dirty south brings some dirty, heavy, dank metal to the table
do not listen while operating heavy machinery
or performing heart surgery

there are a few "points" to this label,
1. CAPITALISM HAS NO PLACE IN INDEPENDENT ART
this is the message,
the massage is cheap tapes
sure its a bit of an exaggeration, but capitalist thought and tendencies are deeply ingrained in "art"
artists deserve a living wage
however, the people selling their art & capitalizing off their art want to make as much as possible off them
for as little effort as possible
2. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU WANT
seriously, try it now
isn't it cool what you just did?
isn't it cooler than using a preset in garageband or fl studio?
you could have drawn some familiar thing
or done a bunch of polka dots
but you did a thing unique to you,
probably something that no one else did
or maybe someone else did do that
find that person through your ESP and be friends with them
which leads me to the third point
3. COMMUNITY IS WHAT WE NEED
right now, the people in power want my friends and neighbors dead
how can we keep them alive?
looking out for each other
art can create amazing communities in the most unlikely places,
in the most unlikely times
currently this label is deep in the financial hole
and that is the point
however, come a time where we receive any form of excess funds
that will go right back to the community
to helping my friends and neighbors
and the artists i love
those are the points
i hope that this label ends up transcending a record label.
i hope that i end up releasing something that is popular on Instagram, and leads all the tiktok HXC kids to look at punk history

Generifus - Solstice Songs
recorded in 2008 at Karl Blau's house in Anacortes, this tape captures the early psychedelic indie folk stylings of Spencer Sult
at this point he's worked with bud tapes, k records, and cemented himself in the vast history of Olympia's DIY scene
this tape is quiet and peaceful, and is a great intro to Generifus
memory card is the solo project of one Henry Tartt, doing "too many things"
his sound is lo-fi soaked rock meditations, until it isn't
there is also bursting LOUD rock on here. it fits the manic cover.
a real summer trip, he described it in an email as
"my bastard son that i play xbox with now that he's a little older"
bonus tracks on the tape! check those!
repping the LBC, early flea is the duo of bryce and ruby making lovely bedroom indie
it is surprising that this is their debut, this is the kind of writing i only aspire to achieve
these are seriously beautiful, they will get stuck in your head
they will speak to yo heart with that intimate sound

while convenience has never been a priority (most of the time it is actively disregarded) at Dollar Tapes,
it is important that people know what the label is up to, and that people hear our ethos.

to rant further:
this came out of my desire to have email notifications sent out whenever there's a new dollar tape. to my knowledge blogspot doesn't support that natively, so i would need to write out emails and send them out to a list. no problem. oh wait how do i collect those emails? have people send emails to me asking to be added, then add them to a google group. not very scalable... would distract from the real work. therefore: substack.
i will probably include some extra ranting like this in substack articles, so that subscribers are forced to think about their actions. that will probably not be on here because if you are looking at this you are doing the right thing. all news will still be published here first, because i like the idea of people having a blog bookmarked and refreshing it at their convenience to check in. no constant beeping, not turned into content for consumption. i like that you can make blogspot look like shit! this page looks so old! substack looks too new... if anyone knows how to enshittify it in the cool way let me know...
i also do not like Instagram, and hope that at some point Dollar Tapes will not be under any major tech companies platform, able to be censored and controlled and funding their agendas. Meta (the parent company of Instagram) recently instituted new policies that actively target my friends and artists on the label. bigotry is now encouraged. people will die because of this but the tech bros do not care. fuck them!
